No More Feeling Drained
Ever feel especially drained after talking to certain people? Have you ever walked into a crowded area feeling neutral or fine, only to find yourself leaving irritated, annoyed or depressed? It could be that your energy boundaries have been crossed.
You may be reacting to feelings or a “vibe” that doesn’t even belong to you. The key to knowing what belongs to you and what belongs to someone else is to simply notice, and plan ahead to set your intention to keep it that way. If you’re in the helping professions, or just find yourself being sensitive to what others are feeling, you need to learn this skill.
Before you go to a difficult meeting, or start a session with a client (such as massage, counseling, therapy, caregiving, even a business meeting), or enter a crowded room, stop and take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes if you can, and imagine that you are being surrounded by a bubble of light. Every time you breathe in, imagine that this light bubble gets stronger, brighter and bigger. As you breathe out, imagine you are breathing out any stress or worry about other people, and breathing out anything that does not belong to you.
Now set your intention that NOTHING comes into your bubble of light without your permission. All interactions with others happen at arm’s reach, at the outer edge of this field of light surrounding you.
Use your common sense too, saying no when you need to!
Remember, this is not about fear, and putting up a wall for protection. Energy boundaries are healthy ways to define how you can feel your best when you interact with others. The better you are at honoring yourself and saying what’s true for you, the easier it is to be there for someone else in a healthy, compassionate way.
